Automated Teller Machine vs. Interactive Teller Machine; what’s the difference?
With updated technology, interactive teller machines are becoming more common among local credit unions and banks seeking to keep up with the ever-changing digital landscape and the demand for a more streamlined member experience. What exactly is the difference between an interactive teller machine and an ATM? Both ATMs and interactive teller machines offer various services to their members. The difference, however, lies in the member experience and basic functionality between the two machines.
ATMs have been around for over fifty years and are a tried and true method for grabbing cash and making quick transactions on the go. ATM transactions are typically limited to basic banking functions such as cash withdrawals, deposits, fund transfers, and balance inquiries, they also do not require assistance from a human teller. These stand-alone machines operate using a card and a personal identification number (PIN) that members use to access their accounts.
On the other hand, an interactive teller machine is a more advanced version of the ATM that combines self-service banking with face-to-face video communication with a live teller. With an interactive teller machine, customers can perform the same basic banking functions as an ATM, and more complex transactions that typically require assistance from a human teller such as check cashing. Customers will interact with a live teller using a camera and a microphone that are built into the interactive teller machine. The teller can answer any questions the member may have, and guide them through the transaction process in real time.
